Franchising vs Consulting

First off, we would like to state that there are several experienced and profitable franchise systems available on the market today. We actually developed our own franchise system from 2007- 2010. Unfortunately, the massage franchise system conflicted with our definition of a successful business model. In our experience, we did not see how the current franchise model could sustain a mutually beneficial partnership between the franchisee and the franchisor.


Here are some of the challenges with being in a franchise system:


  • Massage Franchise costs range between $150,000 to $600,000 per franchise location just to open.

  • Mandatory monthly royalty fees ranging between 6% - 7% of the gross sales. The harder you work, the more money your center is bringing in, the more you are paying to the Franchisor.

  • Mandatory monthly marketing budgets up to $15,000/month.

  • High mandatory grand opening budgets up to $20,000

  • High labor costs including a minimum number of staff at your center.

  • All supplies and marketing materials must be purchased through the franchisor at a premium cost. The mark-up on these is usually 100% - 200%.

  • Quarterly on-site evaluations where you are graded based on how well you are following the system.

  • Location choices are limited. Most of the good markets and prime locations are already taken.

  • Multiple costs for multiple locations. You have to pay a franchise fee per territory, plus royalties for each location.

  • You must sign a 10 year UFDD (Uniform Franchise Disclosure Document:

    • contract that the franchisor doesn't even have to renew your contract after that.

    • During this 10 year contract period, you will pay the franchisor between $300,000 - $600,000 in royalties per location! 

  • By signing the UFDD you relinquish most of your rights. The franchisor can take away the license or charter if they decide you are not following the system and re-sell your territory.

  • You are “renting” this concept/business for 10 years. You do not own it all by yourself. You have a business partner (franchisor) that has majority control.

The founders of Zen Massage Dilworth, Kevin and Lea Koon, are now offering the Massage Mentors consulting program. Our intention is to show you the most cost effective and profitable way to start your own massage therapy center. You will be tapping into our 10+ years of hands-on massage industry experience as well as our 20+ years of marketing experience.


In 2005 we started the original Zen Massage Center in Charlotte, North Carolina. After two successful years of building the business we decided to franchise the concept in 2007. The franchise grew extremely fast, selling 39 territories in the first 18 months. In 2010 we sold the franchising side of the business and decided to put all of our focus on expanding our Zen Massage Dilworth location. 


Over the past four years we have experienced immense growth through the implementation of new systems and marketing programs. After applying these changes, both 2012 and 2013 were our most successful years to date. We have developed creative ways to maximize profits and cut costs, while consistently delivering the highest level of massage therapy and customer service. 2014 will be our 9th year of business and we are ready to share our successful business model with others, through a consulting program that is fair, affordable and effective.


What happens after you open your center? 


  • For no additional fee Massage Mentors will remain your consultants for 3 months after you have opened your business.

  • After your first 3 months of business we are always available for a small hourly consulting fee.

  • We are here for you 24/7 by offering the following services:

    • Consult with you via phone, email or Google Hangout

    • Additional training for your staff at our center

    • Additional on-site training at your center

  • In addition, we will continue to share with you all the new marketing and operations concepts that we learn and implement at our center; free of charge.
